Breakfast Club and Chocolate Porridge

Breakfast should be fit for a king, they say.  For me, breakfast would be my favourite meal of the day if I had the time to make and enjoy it properly. The wonderful leisurely breakfasts we recently enjoyed whilst on holiday on the Scilly Isles, set us up for the day and were, quite frankly, one of the highlights of the whole trip. Normally, I'm dashing down the road with a piece of toast in my hand, rushing for the train. Admittedly, the toast is from my own homemade sourdough, but it would be nice to have the time to enjoy it sitting down and not on the hoof.

To affirm my love of breakfast, I'm very pleased to be hosting Breakfast Club this month. Breakfast club is the very sound inspiration from Helen of Fuss Free Flavours. I haven't participated more than a couple of times so far, as there is a limit to just how much chocolate you can eat for breakfast, but I'm pleased to be doing so now. The theme  is of course chocolate!

I have asked for chocolate inspired breakfasts once before, way back in the early days of my blog. So it feels like the time is right to revisit. I look forward to your chocolatey creations.

At this time of year, the humble oat makes a welcome comeback and porridge is our breakfast of choice at the weekend, err, sometimes adorned with a dollop of Cornish clotted cream. The following recipe for Chocolate Oatmeal Porridge was one I developed for a recent oatmeal competition. Sadly I didn't win, but I certainly enjoyed eating the porridge anyway.

Here goes:

This makes for an indulgent, but healthy, winter weekend breakfast for two. It's delicious, but not too sweet and with the nutritious oats and anitoxidents in the chocolate, it actually makes for a healthy and sustaining breakfast.

1/2 pt milk
1/2 pt water
50g fine oatmeal
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
1 tsp honey
50g 70% dark chocolate - broken into pieces.
swirl of yogurt or cream (optional)

Bring the milk and water to boiling point in a medium sized saucepan. Slowly whisk in the oatmeal. Turn the heat down to the lowest setting & continue to whisk for a few minutes. Add cinnamon and whisk until fully incorporated. Cover and leave to cook for 15 minutes, whisking every 4 minutes or so. This bit is important to stop the porridge sticking and to give it a nice creamy consistency. Turn off the heat and add the honey and chocolate. Give it a final whisk and pour into two bowls. Add a swirl of yogurt or cream if desired.

  1. Chocolate porridge! Yum! My favourite, totally indulgent, thing to do with porridge is to pour a little whisky, a little honey and a little cream over the top, so now I am fantasising about that on top of chocolate porridge.

    1. I very dubiously accepted some whisky on my porridge a couple of years ago and was really quite delighted with how good it was. Sadly, I didn't think to add it to this, but there is always a next time.

    2. Whisky on my porridge is a once-a-year treat. I think I could have chocolate porridge at least twice a year!

    3. I like the idea of a once a year treat - Christmas seems like a suitably good time for the whisky. And actually, about twice a year is as often as I have chocolate porridge, but I usually have it as a pudding.

  3. Chocolate porridge? That's a new one for me. It's porridge season in my house again, usually topped with apple or banana, and I do believe a have a bar of dark chocolate hidden in the cupboard. Think I might treat myself to a bowl of this at the weekend :)

    1. Porridge somehow makes the cold and damp season more welcome I find. Do treat yourself to some chocolate porridge, it's rich, but you can make it as healthy or as unhealthy as you like.

  5. I have taken part in ages, not since my disastrous hosting session where I only had 4 entries, and the theme was eggs too! But, as its you Choclette, I will see what I can do this month!

  6. What a great theme for the challenge. Not sure I can take part, not too sure slimming world would be that pleased with me having chocolate for breakfast, but I look forward to seeing everyone's posts ... and maybe gain a few ideas for when I feel like being a little bit naughty ;0)

  7. First thing that comes to mind is pain au chocolat, but don't think I'll be spending hours making the butter pastry! Will see if I can think of something less time consuming.

  8. I have never tried a chocolate porridge, but why not? Makes a total sense to me. :) I like the ideaof the breakfast challenge, will try to take part. Like Janice, my first thought was pain au chocolat.

    1. Ahh Janine, but if you make it the traditional Scots way with only water, the cream doesn't seem quite so bad - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it ;-)

  11. Chocolate porridge? Why not? :) I've got a little idea forming in my head but not sure if I will get round to it. Limited baking and blogging this month as I'm packing and moving next week. Will try my best! Looking forward to the round up :)

  12. If anything would encourage me to like porridge more, this version would. I think the clotted cream as well as chocolate would sway me. I have never entered this challenge before but think it's about time I did!

    1. Oh Laura, are you not a porridge lover? Have your tried real Scots porridge made with oatmeal, water and salt? Would love you to try your hand at something chocolatey for breakfast.

  13. I've heard of peas porridge hot and peas porridge cold..but I've never heard of chocolate porridge! Now that I have..I would love some! It looks wonderful!

    1. Ooh now you've got me thinking of peas porridge - wonderful stuff my mother used to make. If I wasn't a vegetarian I think I'd swap you the chocolate porridge for the peas one ;-)

  14. My kids would love to eat this porridge for breakfast. Porridge with raisins and yogurt is their regular breakfast, the chocolate version could be a great Sunday morning treat!

  16. Chocolate porridge sounds like an excellent breakfast to me. I once made blueberry porridge and that was a pretty spectacular colour too :-) I bet chocolate porridge would be good with a little vanilla in it too. Well, my entry is chocolate sliders (rolls) spread with choccy philly, so a double chocolate hit. They're pretty good spread with butter and a square of Lindt dark chocolate too though....
